From Mario Villa to 8853 S.p.a: history, tradition and innovation in the third generation
We are in the 1950s, at the height of the post-war period. Italians are experiencing a moment of rebirth and great economic and social growth. Among them was Mario Villa, a Milanese owner of a goldsmith's shop in Via Piero della Francesca, a historic street of Milanese craftsmanship. The contingent sector and a sharp wit led him to open a gold bank: thus Mario Villa Banco Metalli was born, located at Via Mazzini 16, where the historic sign is still visible today and this precious trade continues.
The business was immediately successful and in just a few years grew from a small town business to an increasingly large one. This, combined with the desire to respond to other needs in the sector, led to the opening of a gold and precious metals processing plant, which was followed by a precious metals trading business. Over the following decades, these activities made Mario Villa a well-established business, among the most prestigious and authoritative in the sector in Italy.
In 1992, the business took the name O.LE.P. S.r.l. (Odonto Leghe Preziose), a moment that marked the generational transition to his son Giorgio Villa, the current CEO. Later the name changed again, becoming 8853 S.p.A.. a reference to the historic telephone number 02-8853, still active today. Dating back to this second evolution is the need to create divisions that would make the different markets in which the company operates more evident, which have increased over time.
In the 1970s, in fact, a precious dental alloy trading activity was added, under the brands Orvill and later Valcambi Dental: thus began the relationship with the medical and dental world of dentistry, today carried on by the 88dent division. This is currently the company's main market alongside the historical precious metals market, represented by the OROvilla and Banco Villa divisions.
Specifically, the OROvilla and Banco Villa divisions deal with precious metals at 360 degrees: from the purchase and sale of pure raw materials, to the production of ingots under the historical "Mario Villa" brand name and semi-finished products for goldsmith use, to the marketing of gold coins produced by the world's mints (from the classic sterling to the most unusual), as well as the treatment and recovery of precious metals in accordance with the motto: "nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed". OROvilla is aimed at private individuals, while Banco Villa works with industry.
As far as 88dent is concerned, the scenario of dentistry has changed several times in the time since 8853 S.p.A. started working in it, transforming from an analogue reality more and more into a digital one, moving from the use of metals more and more to resins and new materials. The 88dent division has ridden this change while at the same time trying to continue to meet the needs of its historical customers, participating in every step of the process. Thus, two brands were born: 88dent Clinical, reserved for dentists, and 88dent Lab, dedicated to dental technicians.
The trust placed in us by customers and curiosity about the market, combined with the desire to always take on new challenges, eventually led to the creation of two additional divisions.
In the early 2000s, 88Labware was founded and began producing semi-finished precious products, with a catalogue diversified over time to meet the needs of the most diverse markets: from cement factories to the chemical industry, from fine jewellery to surgical equipment and more.
Finally, it was in 2017 that the 88vet division came into being, marketing professional pet care machinery in the veterinary field.
