In a post-war Milan, Mario Villa began his activity as a goldsmith by opening a workshop in Via Piero della Francesca in Milan.

BancoVilla srl was established, a company specialising in the marketing of gold and supplies to craft workshops throughout Italy. Giorgio Villa, the current CEO, combines a modern and agile vision with the tradition and values inherited from his father and founder Mario Villa. It was on his initiative that O.L.E.P. (Odonto Leghe Preziose) S.r.l. was founded, dedicated to trading in precious alloys for the dental market.

O.L.E.P. S.r.l. becomes 8853 S.p.A., combining the heritage of the precious alloy and dental worlds. The name is a reference to the historic telephone number 02-8853, which is still active today. It was at this time that the need was felt to create divisions that would make the various markets in which the company operates more evident, which have further increased over time

Rachele Villa, after a career outside the company, joins 8853 S.p.A. in the 88dent division, which was founded in 1992 and has grown to become one of the pillars of the company. This is a BU with a very broad and diversified range of products, from which a veterinary-related sub-branch, 88 Vet, was derived in 2018

Platinum crucibles and accessories for XRF analysis, microanalysis, ashing and evaporation, mini-crucibles, lids, capsules, saucers, mixing shuttles, tongs with platinum-coated tips, probes, electrodes, are machined from platinum or derived alloys combined with gold, rhodium, iridium and palladium or other precious metals. Another service provided is the recovery of platinum contained in spent crucibles that can be purchased by the company or used for the production of new crucibles.

88dent, always with an eye on the future of the dental sector, has been promoting and accompanying dentists and dental technicians in the transition to the digital world for some time now. The business has grown to the point that a sub-division is now necessary: 88dent CLINICAL provides dentists with state-of-the-art technologies such as diode lasers, intraoral scanners, software and machinery. 88Dent LAB allows dental technicians to become increasingly digital, while maintaining the aesthetic customisation that has always characterised their profession. The two lines are designed to improve the work and communication between dentist, dental technician and patient.

Respect for work. What is one of the mottos that could best describe Milanese operations? 'Head down and pedal'. So commitment, concentration, focus on objectives, dedication. Work as passion. But work also deserves respect because it is what allows us to keep our lives safe. At 8853, the people are not a number, the salaries always regular, the contracts solid and lasting. Perhaps that is why some employees have lived their entire careers at 8853, and many others have been with the company for more than a decade..

From Mario Villa to 8853 S.p.a: history, tradition and innovation in the third generation

We are in the 1950s, at the height of the post-war period. Italians are experiencing a moment of rebirth and great economic and social growth. Among them was Mario Villa, a Milanese owner of a goldsmith's shop in Via Piero della Francesca, a historic street of Milanese craftsmanship. The contingent sector and a sharp wit led him to open a gold bank: thus Mario Villa Banco Metalli was born, located at Via Mazzini 16, where the historic sign is still visible today and this precious trade continues.

The business was immediately successful and in just a few years grew from a small town business to an increasingly large one. This, combined with the desire to respond to other needs in the sector, led to the opening of a gold and precious metals processing plant, which was followed by a precious metals trading business. Over the following decades, these activities made Mario Villa a well-established business, among the most prestigious and authoritative in the sector in Italy.

 

In 1992, the business took the name O.LE.P. S.r.l. (Odonto Leghe Preziose), a moment that marked the generational transition to his son Giorgio Villa, the current CEO. Later the name changed again, becoming 8853 S.p.A.. a reference to the historic telephone number 02-8853, still active today. Dating back to this second evolution is the need to create divisions that would make the different markets in which the company operates more evident, which have increased over time.

 

In the 1970s, in fact, a precious dental alloy trading activity was added, under the brands Orvill and later Valcambi Dental: thus began the relationship with the medical and dental world of dentistry, today carried on by the 88dent division. This is currently the company's main market alongside the historical precious metals market, represented by the OROvilla and Banco Villa divisions.

Specifically, the OROvilla and Banco Villa divisions deal with precious metals at 360 degrees: from the purchase and sale of pure raw materials, to the production of ingots under the historical "Mario Villa" brand name and semi-finished products for goldsmith use, to the marketing of gold coins produced by the world's mints (from the classic sterling to the most unusual), as well as the treatment and recovery of precious metals in accordance with the motto: "nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed". OROvilla is aimed at private individuals, while Banco Villa works with industry.

 

As far as 88dent is concerned, the scenario of dentistry has changed several times in the time since 8853 S.p.A. started working in it, transforming from an analogue reality more and more into a digital one, moving from the use of metals more and more to resins and new materials. The 88dent division has ridden this change while at the same time trying to continue to meet the needs of its historical customers, participating in every step of the process. Thus, two brands were born: 88dent Clinical, reserved for dentists, and 88dent Lab, dedicated to dental technicians.

The trust placed in us by customers and curiosity about the market, combined with the desire to always take on new challenges, eventually led to the creation of two additional divisions.

In the early 2000s, 88Labware was founded and began producing semi-finished precious products, with a catalogue diversified over time to meet the needs of the most diverse markets: from cement factories to the chemical industry, from fine jewellery to surgical equipment and more.

Finally, it was in 2017 that the 88vet division came into being, marketing professional pet care machinery in the veterinary field.

 

 

Where does the name 8853 come from?

When 8853 S.p.A. was founded in 1993, it was necessary to unite two large areas under one roof: precious metals with the dental technology sector.

Our CEO made a 'marketing strategy' choice of naming the company after our historic telephone number, bearing in mind that in those days there was no internet but the yellow pages and numbers were always at the top of the list!

History, tradition and looking to the future have always been the company's hallmarks. This is why we have chosen a name that is 'historic' for us - our historic telephone number +39 02 8853. A way of passing on the company's important history as well.

Company headquarters and historic location

at Via Mazzini 16 in Milan, in the heart of the Lombard capital, a stone's throw from the Duomo. Here you will find the historic Banco Villa shop and the new OROvilla store, where you can request a free consultation in an elegant setting. Production and administrative site

at Via Pitagora 11 in Pero, in the province of Milan, where, thanks to state-of-the-art instruments and machinery, all casting, processing, analysis and production operations related to precious metals are carried out. Also located here is the milling centre where various dental processing operations are carried out. But it is also a business location, where it is possible to buy pure metals, ingots and gold coins as well as sell used gold, gold tokens and goldsmith's scrap. The sales offices of 88dent, 88Labware and 88vet are also located here. In short, it is the heart of the company, where all BUs work in synergy.

Our certifications, your safety

The design, production and distribution activities of 8853 S.p.A. alloys are carried out under a quality regime, in compliance with ISO 9001 and UNI CEI EN ISO 13485 standards; all this has allowed 8853 S.p.A. to CE mark its products in the specific sector of dental alloys in accordance with the requirements of Directive 93/42/EEC of 14 June 1993 and subsequent amendments.

8853 S.p.A has also implemented the general policy with the sustainability project by obtaining the voluntary "Code of Practice" and "Chain of Custody" certification of the "Responsible Jewellery Council".

The 'Responsible Jewellery Council' (RJC) is a non-profit organisation founded to promote ethically, socially and environmentally responsible practices that respect human rights, throughout the Diamond and/or Gold Jewellery supply chain, from extraction to sale. RJC brings together more than 400 of the world's leading companies representing the entire gold supply chain, from mining to major jewellery manufacturers such as Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany, etc.

This entails very strict controls during acceptance of raw materials and final checks to ensure a product that meets the quality standards that today's market demands.
